Halloween is a huge hit in our house. It is basically where my love for all things makeup began. From the time I was very young, I could remember loving the anticipation of Halloween and loving creating my costumes and of course the Halloween makeup.
I planned our outfits, the scene and the makeup. After our first shoot, the feedback was phenomenal. It then sent the wheels spinning in my head to continue to do this with my family as it grew. Here is our shoots from Halloween’s past. 1 & 2 at the top, 3 & 4 in the middle and 5th, bottom left, including this year’s on the bottom right.
This past Halloween, was our 6th Halloween family photoshoot and probably my favourite so far. We now have 3 kids to join us in all the ghoulish fun. They absolutely love it and now contribute their own creativity into the process.
I decorated our dining room with some cobwebs, giant spiders, paper bats. I set our table for a feast of the young (our third babe as our main course)
A toast with some cranberry juice made to look like blood, and there you have it. The Cherlet family at our best, I mean worst…our best worst.
Already starting to plan for next year’s shoot. All in good fun!
I was having lunch with some family and friends at a local restaurant here in Squamish, when I met her. She was our server at the Howe Sound Brew Pub. I knew right away, that I needed to use my makeup skills and do a photoshoot together.
Then my husband, (my biggest fan) jumped in and said “I have one of your business cards” What did I have to loose at that point? Not much.
So I waited until we got our bill, and asked her. Like I was asking her out on a date. Our table of 10 all watching, I was sure that she was going to say no to the idea. She seemed very receptive.
I contacted a photographer I work with here in Squamish, and David jumped on the idea as well.
I loved her enthusiasm.
Here is the result of my photoshoot with my beautiful friend and shot by David Fournier.
She’s a total babe.
Giving back is really important to me. I try to give away a makeup makeover at least 6 times a year.
By giving, I get so much more in return. I always leave these makeovers happy and fulfilled and the last one I did in 2015 was by far the best of the year.
When I announced that Siobhan won, she responded almost right away but she had a dilemma. She lives in Terrace, BC which is about 8 hours away from Squamish, and the greater Vancouver area.
I wasn’t sure how it was going to work, until she told me that she’d be coming into Vancouver over the next week or so. I instantly jumped at the idea and made the arrangements.
I set up my chair and she jumped right in and said “I feel like a movie star”.
Siobhan was the perfect reminder as to why I do these makeovers. It brings out a level of confidence and self love that just makes me feel great. Each and everyone of these women look at me with an appreciation for making them feel beautiful, confident and powerful and that alone is the main reason why I do this.
When I was done with my makeup makeover on Siobhan, I had a few minutes left so I asked if her daughter Aedin who is 14 and was eagerly watching me the whole time, if she wanted to sit in the chair and get a min makeover too. She was absolutely happy too.
Check out Siobhan and her daughter Aedin’s beauty looks.
In Squamish, our summers are fairly hot. It’s a humid heat so the majority of the time, your makeup is melting off your face. So for this particular shoot, it was a bit of a challenge to say the least.
We went up to Anderson Beach in Squamish, BC. It just so happened to be one of the hottest days of the year and the last. It was a perfect day for this particular shoot.
Man, were we hot. Literally. I was a bit worried going into the day, but definitely pulled it off in the end.
With lot’s of blotting and a layering technique, I was able to keep the makeup where I wanted it to and keep the shiny sweat look at bay.
Check it out!

When you’ve purchased some natural mineral makeup and go to put it on and find yourself not happy with the results, certain techniques can help it last longer and look better.
Sometimes I get a request from a Squamish bride for mineral makeup. The worst would be for it to come off within a few short hours of application.
Rest assured that I have tried and tested a few brands, and I’ve boiled it down to technique and tools used.
So I will be doing a natural mineral makeup workshop coming up for all you lovely ladies. It will be hosted at Be Clean Naturally on January 26th, 2016 from 6-8pm. It will be an evening of tutorials, tips and tricks. Enjoy a glass of wine and cheese courtesy of Black Market Cheese.
The tickets are $15. If you purchase tickets beforehand, you will receive an additional 10% off all Earth Lab Cosmetics. Come early to save a good seat.
I look forward to seeing all your beautiful faces.
During the winter months, the elements can put your skin through a beating. Dry, itchy, patchy and red. Not to mention the breakouts from all the holiday food. Starting the New Year with a great skin care regime can last through to summer.
Let’s take a moment to remember summer. Ahhh.
Here are some tips to get your skin care on the right track for the new year.
Drink for your health, not your skin. Your healthy skin will just be a bonus. Hydrating your skin from the inside is crucial. Your skin is one of the first tells when you are dehydrated. If you can get a handle on your water intake, you’re setting the tone for amazing skin.
It’s a misconception that we should only use sunscreen in the summer months, but in fact should use all year. If you don’t like sunscreen, coconut oil provides a small amount of UV protection and it will also do wonders for your skin. PRO TIP: Use at night before bed. Splash your face with warm water and then slather it on.
Your skin is very vulnerable during the winter months and your skin care regime doesn’t need to be so rigorous. A simple non-alcohol cleansing routine and great moisturizer will get you by quite nicely.
I know that sounds silly when that’s all we want to do after a cold day on the mountain or outside, but the intense heat of a hot shower or bath actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture.
Over the holidays we like to indulge, and now the new year is a way for us to wash the slate clean and start anew. Diet plays a huge roll in our skin and it’s generally a tell tale for what we are consuming too much of or what we are lacking in our diets. This really only applies to over indulging over the holidays.
If you can, go get yourself a winter facial from your favourite spa/salon. There’s really nothing like getting pampered and coming out with amazing skin. Treat yourself and your skin this new year. Some self care and pampering is needed once in awhile.
My favourite facial in the Sea to Sky corridor lately, has been at Avello Spa in Whistler, BC.
If you are in Squamish or heading to Whistler anytime, check them out. (I am not professionally affiliated with them; I just really love their facials)
It can be a bit of a daunting task to find a professional makeup artist. Especially if you are someone who doesn’t normally wear makeup, as you might not be sure what you are looking for. Here are a few tips to get you started off on the right foot to helping you find the best makeup artist best suited for you.
“You should feel over the moon with the way you look on your wedding day. I can help you feel that” ~ Lyren Cherlet
LOCATION – First you want to find a makeup artist that is in your location, or you can be prepared to pay a travel fee. This fee can range in price according to the individual makeup artist so it’s always good to ask about a fee if they are out of range to your wedding. I have a flat $10 travel fee. I tell my clients that I am available for Whistler, Squamish and Vancouver.
BOOKING – You’ll want to be looking for a makeup artist, at least a few months in advance. Most bridal makeup artists book up their wedding season early. So, if you want a pro, make sure that you leave yourself enough time to find the right artist for you.
PRO vs. NOT – Having a professional do your makeup for your wedding can make all the difference. A professional will know how to work with all skin types and help you with all your needs. A pro makeup artist will also know how to do your makeup best suited for camera. You want to look back on your wedding photos in 50 years, and say that you looked like the best most polished version of yourselves.
CARE – A professional makeup artist will most likely always want to do a trial run with you. It then will set the tone for the big day, your expectations will be laid out and you’ll be able to have an idea how you will look and how the makeup wears. Once it’s wedding day, you’ll have an exact picture and idea to go from.
RELAX – When you are in my makeup chair, you will feel relaxed and well taken care of. I typically tell my brides that they get their hair done first and that they are last in the makeup chair. For the reason of relaxation. It’s the last time you will be able to take an hour or so to relax and compose yourself before you put your dress on.
TIMING – You’ll want a speedy efficient makeup artist that knows how to work with each face promptly. For me, I generally take 30-45 minutes with each face. I like to take at least an hour for the bride, as I said for relaxation, and it will give plenty of time to compose yourself before your big event.
If you are one of my brides, I thank you for allowing me to be a big part of your day. I am so grateful to you and your beautiful bridal party’s.
The debate between synthetic and animal hair brushes has been going on for quite sometime.
Over my career as a professional makeup artist, I’ve become more of an animal activist. It has impacted my life and the way I conduct my businesses.
“Did you know that some makeup brushes are made with real animal hair? It’s true, and the animals didn’t give up their hair willingly—they were either farmed and killed in a slaughterhouse or trapped.” – Peta.org
All I noticed is that it shed on my clients face. It looked like she grew a beard. All over her face. Not a good look.
For me, I don’t think that anyone needs to use animal hair brushes at all.
The advantages of using synthetic brushes outweigh any other. In my opinion, they’re easier to keep clean and last the same if not longer than animal hair brushes and softer. That’s why I’ve chosen to use synthetic brushes.
All in all, it depends on what’s important to you and wether or not it makes a difference if a makeup artist uses animal hair brushes or synthetic.
Here are some of my favourite brushes and tools:
I was looking through my closet one day, and saw my wedding dress at the very back. Collecting dust I’m sure, and just plain old lonely in the deep dark pit of my closet. It was then I got the idea to re-shoot it.
What do you do with your wedding dress after your wedding? It goes in a bag and sits in the back of your closet. (Generally speaking) So, I wanted to give “The Wedding Dress” a new life. So I contacted one of my photographer friends and we set out to give my wedding dress a second chance.
Below you will see my shoot with my wedding dress. Luckily it had corset ties at the back because I just squeezed into it. Then you will find a set from my beautiful friend Emily.
Here is the beautiful Emily’s set.
